## Quote

> “how you rank items on a product display page, even though it's still a complimentary module, **will vary greatly**”
> — [Zoe Weil](https://realalpha.app/people/zoe-weil/) at [28:22](https://realalpha.app/v/MAABmDB51LY/?t=1702) · The TWIML AI Podcast

## Takeaways

1. After add-to-cart, rank items that complement the chosen product.
2. Before commitment, show greater variety around the product.
3. The same module can need different rankings at different stages.

## About this segment

The same complementary-products module gets a different ranking on a product page than after add-to-cart. Zoe Weil says commitment changes how much variety to show.

[27:15](https://realalpha.app/v/MAABmDB51LY/?t=1635) even a very tangible example that i think you'll be able to that any uh listener technical or less technical will be able to follow uh think about like complementary products right so let's say you bought a tennis racket um and uh i'm not going to show you other tennis rackets you just added it to your cart, right? In fact, that will most likely dry down conversion. Well, you would think, but then we also have the classic, I just bought a refrigerator on Amazon and now they're showing me refrigerators.

[27:46](https://realalpha.app/v/MAABmDB51LY/?t=1666) Like, why is that? And that's why you would use sequin because we would never do that. That's exactly, no, I'm serious. But anyway, you go on the add to cart page and we show you complimentary items. So we don't show you other tennis rackets. We show you, hey, what about this like sweatband or this tennis ball? But which tennis band and which sweatband or ball we show you is going to vary from user to user.

[28:14](https://realalpha.app/v/MAABmDB51LY/?t=1694) But the point I'm trying to get at is that that complementary module exists throughout many of these sites. So it'll exist on a product display page, but it'll also exist on an app to cart page. and how you rank items on a product display page, even though it's still a complimentary module, will vary greatly from how you rank items on a complimentary module on an Add to Cart page. And that's because by the time the user gets to the Add to Cart page, they've already committed to the tennis racket, right?

[28:47](https://realalpha.app/v/MAABmDB51LY/?t=1727) Whereas I need to be able to show greater diversity on the product display page because they haven't necessarily committed to that tennis racket yet. Does that make sense? Yes and no, right? You have greater diversity in... That's just one example, but the point is that they're both complementary modules. Right, but I'm saying like if I search for a tennis racket, I mostly want to see tennis rackets.

[29:09](https://realalpha.app/v/MAABmDB51LY/?t=1749) I don't want diversity in that list. You don't, but once you click on it, you click on a specific tennis racket. Right, then you don't know what I'm going to need next. Exactly. Well, we're betting that we have an idea before you do or we can get you to click and purchase. Well, so this is an interesting thread.
