About this segment

Sam argues that easier building raises the bar: teams should keep improving until people get daily value, not stop at version one. Granola tests early with small groups before a wider release.

Takeaways

  1. The hard part is deciding what is worth building.
  2. Measure success by whether people get daily value.
  3. Ship early to small groups, but keep a high release bar.

of like anyone can build, but you have like design system and components to make sure that at least the UI is like, looks good, like from any engineer. And then also having a bunch of internal agents that's hooked up to internal systems for people to ask questions. Right. That's kind of. Yeah, I think so. Yeah. Yeah. And then, uh, yeah, yeah. Don't, don't, and trust people to use their time as they, as you know, like as they, um, as they wish.

  2. 30:47

Like, uh, um. Yeah. I mean, yeah. you're not trying to you're not trying to make sure people are working like you know eight hours a week or like there's something you're just trying to see the output right look at the output yeah yeah yeah yeah i really think like um especially maybe now like more than more than the old days like um it's so easy to make stuff so you know it's a cliche now but like it's so easy to make stuff um the hard thing is knowing what to make and like that kind of thinking comes from like doesn't come from just like grinding as hard as you can the whole time like the the probably interesting stuff comes from i don't know going for a walk or taking your time off or or uh um space to go and think about something so yeah that that part is still very human dude because i i i try to brainstorm like what to make with like you know code codex or something and then

  3. 31:30

like the ai is still too agreeable man it is like you know here's some ideas and like it's a good it's a great idea are you sure it's a great idea no it's not a great idea it's just like it's not the same as talking to a human yeah yeah yeah yeah well sam this has been a pleasure man do you have any like closing words of advice for ai builders or people trying to build uh just like tools or companies i guess it is about like trying to figure out what you want to build and maybe i think i mean yeah the thing i the thing i really like appreciate about what we have here which i mostly credit chris my co-founder with Instilling in me and everyone else in the company is like, it's just, you know, it's so easy to build things nowadays. Like one, you got to build something interesting, you know, a lot of the, I think, figuring out what's going to be the interesting thing. But two, like most people stop way too early, I think, when in building stuff, like, you know, they get to the version one, and they push it out the door and ship it. And I think the easier it gets to build stuff, the more it matters to like really sweat the details and go the extra mile to make something that's actually going to be really useful to somebody to hold yourself accountable, not just to shipping something, but to like, does the person actually

get like daily value out of it um and to not stop until you achieve that that goal rather than just the shipping goal i i see yeah yeah yeah because you want to ship some stuff to get some market feedback you don't just like planning forever right yeah yeah yeah we're going to like ship we ship stuff internally like as quickly as we can but um we you know and and to like small groups of friends and baby users and things like that very very early but we do like i think we pull like a very high bar for like is this thing actually working for people you know before we put stuff out got it well uh add me to the janky internal bills man i i think the problem is too polished right now i mean the janky great great no other bills yeah yeah yeah yeah cool
