Anthropic's Dario Amodei says physical limits will slow AI change
Dario Amodei, who runs the AI company Anthropic, said that even very powerful AI will change the world more slowly than some people predict. He said so on the Lex Fridman Podcast, in an episode posted Nov. 11, 2024.
This matters for jobs and for how fast AI shows up in daily life. If Amodei is right, the changes to work, health care and the economy will take years of slow steps, not days.
He rejected the idea that AI will build smarter AI, which then builds everything else almost at once. He said that view neglects the laws of physics, because making faster hardware takes a long time. He also said some systems are too complex to predict, and that running the experiment often beats any model. He said human institutions are hard to move too, from regulators to people wary of new technology. On AI inside those systems, he said this.
"Often the level of intelligence may just not be the limiting factor, right?" That quote starts at 2:10:03.
The Guardian reported on Oct. 23 that experts cast doubt on an Anthropic report detailing how AI has altered work at the company. The paper says Anthropic claims AI will shift how work gets done and labor demand, but some experts are skeptical of that vision.
Amodei also said AI needs popular and democratic legitimacy, and that a small group of developers should not decide what is best for everyone. Anthropic builds and sells AI, so it has a stake in how fast people believe this moves. The moment is from 2024, so it predates the report.
