Google's Sundar Pichai says AI will speed up Google's work in 2027

Sundar Pichai, who runs Google and its parent company Alphabet, expects AI to make Google's own work much faster in 2027. He said so on the podcast Sources, in an episode posted Wednesday.

This touches the apps people use every day, like the Chrome browser. If AI does more of the slow work of building software, new features could reach phones and laptops sooner. It also bears on the jobs of software engineers.

Pichai described Argon, an AI tool that keeps working on a task by itself. He said Google pointed it at problems in Chromium, the code behind Chrome, where one fix can run through millions of lines. For teams, he said, that kind of change used to cut through every layer of the code. Argon can keep going until it gets the job done. At 9:59 he said he views 2027 as "a golden age of that productivity frontier for us".

Insider on MSN reported Thursday that Pichai also uses a team of AI helpers to run the company. They summarize internal discussions and monitor Google's computing power, so he can keep up without reading every update.

Pichai said Google's researchers now work alongside AI systems to build the next ones. He said people stay in the loop. He expects the next 12 months to bring continued acceleration from that.
