About this segment

Felix says coding agents resonate when framed as a way to accomplish something new, not as coding tools. That framing may help artists see expanded agency rather than a threat to their identity.

Takeaways

  1. Start with the outcome a person couldn't achieve before.
  2. Talk about coding agents as a means, not a category.
  3. AI's value is not limited to automating paid work.

like reject AI very vehemently a lot of these people are very like artist types and so for me like because I'm also an artist I wish that there was a way to explain to people okay like LLMs aside there is this thing called coding agents and these this thing called coding agents can like amplify your um the the amount of tools that you have access to like as a creative or it can help you like onboard onto new tools that you previously wouldn't have discovered um and just like all of this other stuff and so i think that there's this like conflation of of ai just meaning everything meaning the chat box yeah um mean you know like a that view of it so what do you think would be your sort of like response or how do you get people to understand the value of like the coding agent itself as a separate product uh like specifically mean for artists and like not for artists for yeah for

  2. 22:30

people that um because the i think the lack of diffusion of of the coding agent as a product is really under discussed like in the silicon valley yeah you know what you know what i think i think people are usually most excited when ai does something that they can't do so like Like, a good example would be we recently released Cloud Design, and the people who are most excited about Cloud Design are people who do not work full-time in design.

  3. 22:55

Right. And similarly, the people who are most excited about the Cloud Code capabilities are usually the ones who are not top of their field in engineering. Exactly. Yeah. And the same goes on for everyone, right? Like, I'm super excited about Cloud helping me with, like, medical stuff. Awesome. Yeah. And, like, my doctor friends are, like, a little bit more suspicious of that, understandably so. and I think if you like if you like keep going with this there's probably about like 50 different reasons but I think the most important thing is that it's sort of it's less in the product and more so and like maybe how we discuss it sometimes right like just because I can take a photograph of the Mona Lisa doesn't mean that the Mona Lisa doesn't have value anymore and you wouldn't go and see it in the museum and I think if we talk about these things as if that was that that's sort of

  4. 23:40

where like maybe the loss of identity comes from also the loss of agency and just like general bad feelings so if you're asking me how do I talk to people about coding agents I usually don't really talk to them about like this as a coding agent I talk about it as like this is some means for you to get something done that you couldn't do before yes and I really very strongly I believe that that is where that is where most the reason why I work on this right like I've spent so much of my time in my career working on like making tools easier building developer tools that like grow the number of people can do a certain thing and this just like goes straight into the same area now granted a lot of the economic value of AI comes from automation right that's where all the money is right now um but I think like it happened so so many times

  5. 24:27

before with with like the photograph or the typewriter or like i i do think this is a pretty
